Sleep DeprivationIt’s Time To Unplug For Better Rest

Many people depend on electronics to complete their daily tasks. The developed world is heavily dependent on technology. You yourself likely use a computer for work, school, and/or leisurely activities. It’s hard to find an individual who does not own a cellphone, a TV, a gaming system, a home computer, or some combination of these items. The Internet is a wonderful way to do research and to stay in touch with friends. But were you aware that these devices could be robbing you from much needed rest and focus?

Why Unplug?

There was an article published in the NY Times that brought the very real danger of technology addiction to light. The technology leaders in Silicon Valley are urging people to step away from technology – to take a break from the constant flow of blips, bleeps, pings, and tweets. These technology leaders in Silicon Valley include social media giants such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter. While they are creating platforms that depend on people being online, they are also acknowledging that a balance should be in place. Too much exposure to technology denies us of this very human and intimate connection with our environment. We all have a personal responsibility to take care of ourselves. We owe ourselves a break from the screens and time to connect on a personal one on one basis with another human being – face to face. Fostering our personal relationships promotes wellness. Richard Fernandez, an executive coach at Google, noted the following:

“We can have more intimate and authentic relationships with ourselves and those we love in our communities. Consumers need to have an internal compass where they’re able to balance the capabilities that technology offers them for work, for search, with the qualities of the lives they live offline. It’s about creating space, because otherwise we can be swept away by our technologies.”

Power Down and Sleep

Aside from the possibility of addiction and technology dependence hurting our relationship with the environment, there is also the very real threat of sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation can cause depression, illness, lack of focus, and a whole array of other issues. Perhaps you don’t stay up late. You may be wondering how technology in the evening could be affecting your health. Studies have shown that those who stay connected to their electronic devices right up to bedtime have more interrupted sleep and less deep sleep cycles. This can, over time, seriously affect your well-being! The National Sleep Foundation found that a majority of Americans do not get enough sleep. In fact, 95% of those in the study admitted to using an electronic device within the hour before bedtime. The light from the device can actually disrupt the body’s internal clock. Women’s Health reported, “light exposure prior to bedtime can disrupt the body’s rhythms and suppress the release of melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep. Some individuals are more sensitive than others to light before bedtime, but it can’t hurt to limit exposure. Experts suggest imposing an “electronic curfew” and powering all devices down at least an hour before bedtime.” So take some time to interact with your friends, family, and pets – or simply have some down time for yourself in the evening. It will help your mind to relax and create some peace and balance in your life!
