spring cleansing

When we think of spring we often think of flowers, rain, relief from the cold weather, and spring cleaning. For those who have felt like hibernating bears all winter, spring can mean a need for spring cleansing! It’s time to wake your body up and purge away the lazy days of winter. It’s time to cleanse your body and give it a chance to feel renewed. While many of us are living through what feels like the next ice age – let’s think about spring and the hope of warmer weather.

Why Cleanse?

For most of us, winter is not our most active season. The shorter days and less sun light can make us more tired and leave us feeling a bit drained due to hormonal changes. (We tend to want to bundle up on cold days with a warm cup of our favorite beverage.) Cleansing is a great way to reboot your body and boost your digestive system to its peak performance. Starving yourself is damaging and fad diets can have the opposite effect that the dieter is hoping for. However, simply rebooting your body with a good cleanse every so often can be hugely beneficial. The winter weather makes our bodies slow down. Sickness thrives in the winter in part because of our lowered immune systems. This leaves us feeling weak and generally run down. Sometimes our bodies just need a way to clean out and renew.

Prepping For a Healthier You

The best way to begin prepping for spring is by increasing your fruit and veggie intake. Buy high quality organic produce to begin your spring cleansing. Start by including more dark green leafy veggies in your diet and include a salad with lunch and dinner. If you eat meat, try keeping your red meat intake to a minimum and shoot for a 2/3 : 1/3 ratio of vegetables and meat. This means that your diet should be no more than 1/3rd animal protein. Make sure to include whole grains like brown rice into your diet. Brown rice is high in fiber and Vitamin B, which is a mood enhancer! If you don’t have an exercise routine just start stretching every day. Keep it simple and add Yoga or Pilates or some kind of low impact activity. Try to exercise around the same time every day. Start out simple with just 20 or 30 minutes a day. If you honestly can’t find this time try just 3 times a week. The idea is to form a habit of exercising and as the weather warms up you can take your habit outside! Next thing you know you will be taking brisk walks and getting your heart pumping. As more local organic produce becomes available in your area it will become more affordable to eat all-organic. If you still feel like you need a deeper cleansing talk with your health care professional and check out some safer cleanses online that do not require you to starve yourself. A good cleanse will have enough juicing or healthy additives that you should not feel like you are starving. Before you know it you’ll be back on track – and ready for that warm weather!
