Our environment holds the key to medical miracles… and to many of our ailments! With just one instance of exposure to undercooked food or a contaminated countertop, and we can suffer the unpleasant effects for a day, or more, of food poisoning. However, some things in our environment are not so evident. Some toxins build up in our system over time, and cause disease and sickness that we may not immediately link to an environmental toxin. Many times, we can even be contributing to our environmental toxins without realizing it.
The Many Forms of Toxins
You know to keep yourself and your loved ones protected from obvious toxic chemicals; but were you aware that items labeled for common household use, may carry dangerous toxins?!
Is Clean Really Clean?
Back in the day, antibacterial soap seemed like a miracle. Parents and individuals alike were thrilled to buy hand soap that touted the label of being antibacterial. Parents were excited to think they were stopping all the typical grade school sicknesses. There’s antibacterial hand soap, body wash, dish soap, floor cleaners, and these same antibacterial chemicals are even found in toothpaste! Researchers believe this over-dosing of antibacterial agents, along with the overuse of antibiotics, has led us to the present age of super bugs and dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. Antibacterial products are not the only hidden toxins in our immediate environment. A friend of mine has a child with Asperger’s, one with Asthma, and one with ADHD. Everywhere she went, when they were little, she was tossed some other medication to treat the symptoms of their ailment. After some research, we found out that many of the chemicals in her own home could be contributing factors to their ailments.
I Was Floored!
We couldn’t believe all the toxins in her home that could have been contributing to some of their ailments. A few of the places I found toxins were:
- Fragrances found in our everyday items: laundry soap, dryer sheets, perfumes, cleaners, clothing, trash bags, erasers (those cute shaped smelly ones marketed for kids!)
- Flame Retardants found in electronics, carpets, furniture, carpet padding, children’s clothing, curtains, bedding
- BPA is not just found in your plastic bottles, but can be absorbed through your skin by handling your store receipts!
They were everywhere!
Taking Action
I was so affected by what we found. I went home and started getting rid of ALL my cleaning products. I switched my laundry soap to home-made laundry detergent. You can find the recipe I use here. I was able to replace my household cleaners with all natural cleaners. My friend and I are not afraid of germs. She encourages her children to splash in puddles and play outside with their dog. We just want fewer toxins, to give her children’s bodies less to have to fight against. After these efforts, we noticed a marked increase in all three of her children’s health. While they are not cured by any means, the difference in their lives is proof to me that toxins are a major contributing factor to their suffering. We still have a way to go in purifying our environment. But we already are seeing a marked increase in our health and in the health of my friend’s children. All-natural cleaners are a great start.
