Going green in the home with non-toxic oven cleanersNatural home cleaning supplies are going to become more and more in demand as we progress well deeper into our current decade. That’s my prediction. Why? Well, you don’t have to look very far for a good reason. I sure didn’t. I got as far as the kitchen. More specifically, the oven. And if your oven is anything like mine, it tends to get neglected for a few months at least, since it’s a pain to keep clean. It would be easier if ovens were walk-ins like a closet, but that’s probably not a cost-effective option. A healthier home is generally the goal of most moms, most would suppose, right? Well, I was trying to be healthy, but I couldn’t believe what I was using for oven cleaner. I’m pretty careful when it comes to my food choices. I read labels and try to decipher the hidden meanings behind the chemical names, and a LOT of products don’t even make it off the shelf for inspection. I can do without the high fructose corn syrup, thanks (that’s whole aisles of products in some stores). But I have to admit, I’ve been less careful with toxic cleaning chemicals. Looks like the companies producing these chemicals haven’t been so careful either. Needless to say, I was shocked at the toxins I was allowing in my home. So I started comparing different oven cleaners. I couldn’t find one in stores that wasn’t full of toxic cleaning chemicals. Figuring that others might be interested knowing what chemicals are in their oven cleaners (I can’t be the only mom wondering), I decided to roll up my sleeves and do some research. It’s time consuming, so I’ll have to do it in pieces, starting with a comparison of oven cleaners and their chemicals. Maybe I’ll find a toxin-free oven cleaner along the way. What oven cleaners do you prefer? Do you worry about the health risks, or effectiveness of a given product? And if anyone has a real good toxin-free replacement for oven cleaners, please share!
