pesticide use Your Diet & Pesticide Toxicity

There is no doubt that if you eat conventionally grown foods you will be exposed to pesticides. It is a fact and there is no way around it. Washing your foods is still very helpful and can minimize your exposure. Nevertheless, over time some of the chemicals and toxins can build up and repeated exposure to toxins can cause damage to your wellbeing. However, how much are you really exposed to over time? How does this exposure really affect you? Science may now be able to tell you!

Dietary Data & You

It really isn’t that much of a mystery that if your life is dedicated to organic living your chemical toxin exposure will be significantly reduced. This is of course, measured against an individual who lives a typical conventionally normal lifestyle. Therefore, this may not seem so fascinating to you at first. Nevertheless, stick with me because the new research that was published in February of this year could open all new possibilities for the organic community! Cynthia Curl with Boise State University has published a study that was able to predict a person’s pesticide exposure based on their current normal diet. This could be groundbreaking!

One Small Step for Science –Giant Leap for Organics

“If we can predict pesticide exposure using dietary questionnaire data, then we may be able to understand the potential health effects of dietary exposure to pesticides without having to collect biological samples from people,” Curl said. “That will allow research on organic food to be both less expensive and less invasive,” (Boise State Edu). Our only method of collecting data and analyzing pesticide exposure right now is through the use of urine samples – or blood. You can imagine not a terrible large amount of people want to contribute. Then, there is a waiting game and those same people would need repeated testing to watch for exposure. A long and tedious process can leave us with very inconclusive data.

Validating the Organic Community

Curl’s research, of course, came up with the obvious answer that those with an organic diet had a significantly less amount of pesticide exposure over time. But what makes this data and this new study so exciting for the organic community, is that the USDA may be able to use her new methods to predict health outcomes also. You know the risk of pesticide use and the many chemicals and toxins that people are exposed to. You may even already know the many health issues that have been reported from pesticide exposure. This is why you strive to live as organic a lifestyle as possible. Now the USDA may be able to finally see the results in their own data and perhaps one day we can have this knowledge become common knowledge. Perhaps one day soon, organic foods will be the norm and conventionally grown food items will become the more expensive and a hard to obtain product!
