Sports Fans with PassionAre You A Passionate Sports Fan?

A harsh winter is known for bringing about a baby boom in the spring. But passion comes in many forms and can be beneficial to your health. One passion that comes to mind is football. While many spouses feels plagued by the season and the obsession of their partner over a sports game, there is some science behind the health benefits of being a passionate fan.

Cheering Your Way to Healthy Victory

It is Sunday as I write this. This means that while I clickity-click my way across the keyboard my spouse is curled up on the couch watching the NFL. Since we live far from our “home” team he hopes and prays each Sunday, and Monday, that his team will be aired. Just in case it isn’t he has what he calls his “away team” that he will passionately cheer on. Every possible Sunday he can be found cheering and jeering to the sounds of crushing helmets. Being passionate about sports can actually affect your health. But it’s not just any kind of passion that has a positive effect on your health.  All those near misses and losses can weigh on an individual; especially if they identify with their team on a very personal level. If your passion invades every family affair and you find yourself in a near depression at every loss, you may be doing yourself more harm than good. If you get excited and cheer on your team while leaping off your couch, and at a loss you still congratulate a friend or family member who was cheering for the opposite team – you could be giving yourself a healthy dose of endorphins!

The Great Transformation & Feeling of Oneness

Being an avid sports fan gets your blood pumping, makes you feel a sense of comradery with strangers, and burns calories as you jump and cheer, and can leave you feeling closer to those around you. The feeling of being a part of an event that reaches millions of people can be exhilarating. Many introverted people briefly become extroverts! Prevention magazine wrote an article about this very thing. They highlighted some health benefits to being a sports fan and even brought it to light that 64% of Americans are watching football during the football season. (This isn’t just for the boys; forty-four percent of those Americans are women!) The following benefits are highlighted:

  • Inspires activity
  • You’ll live longer
  • Good for relationships
  • Can make you smarter!

Many people are inspired to exercise when they see their favorite athlete doing what they love. Live events not only have you walking up and down the stadium stairs, but also working off calories by cheering and jumping from your seat. Having a strong social network can give you a 50% chance of living longer! Friendships and the bonds made through sports help to relieve stress. Less stress means a healthier you! As your brain processes all the scores, stats, and rules of the game it is actually exercise for your noggin!

Encourage Their Passion for the Game

Even if you are not a sports fan you can encourage your sports fan. You will improve your health too. It can strengthen the bond you have and you can get many of the same benefits by showing an interest in your partner’s love of the game. So put your game face on and enjoy the energy of a good game! You may just reap some health benefits while you’re at it.
