Eco-enthusiasts have a variety of options to choose from when they are planning a move. Whether they are moving across the city or across the country, there are many different ways they can make their move into an earth friendly one.

Purging

Moving is a great time to take a thorough inventory of what you own and decide whether or not you really need it. Instead of taking unused odds and ends to the landfill, donate or sell items that are still usable. This process should be completed well in advance of moving day so that you don’t end up packing and moving things that are not needed. Moving items from place to place requires a variety of packing materials, gas and a vehicle to move them in. If you pass along the things that you aren’t using, all of these wastes will be cut down. It will also result in your new place feeling larger and less cluttered.

Cleaning

Moves often involve tons of cleaning. After everything is packed up, an old residence is scrubbed to get ready for its new arrivals. When you get to your new place, it is usually scrubbed top to bottom as well to make sure that it is as clean as possible before unpacking begins. With all this cleaning comes the possible introduction of many toxic chemicals that are hard on the planet and the people living on it. Try using all natural, eco-friendly alternatives instead of chemical laden options. Many of these cleaning product alternatives can even be made at home from natural sources such as vinegar, water and baking soda. These DIY options are not only planet friendly, they are extremely affordable too.

Recycled Boxes

Another great way to be conscious of Mother Earth when you are moving is by sourcing used boxes to pack with. Many stores will quite happily give away some of their cardboard boxes that they have received goods in to people who need them. Try grocery stores or liquor stores. Another great way to get previously enjoyed boxes is to check online classified ads such as Kijiji or Craig’s List. Oftentimes, people will pass along their boxes after a move by listing them for free on one of these websites. This can be a great way to get rid of cardboard moving boxes that are still in good shape after a move as well.

Plastic Moving Boxes

A few different companies have popped up in recent years as people who are moving are looking for greener alternatives to traditional moving boxes. These companies supply plastic storage containers that can be purchased or rented for packing and moving purposes. Plastic containers can be a great option because they can be used over and over again. They are also extremely convenient because they are very strong, durable, reusable and of uniform shape which makes it easier and more efficient to pack up a moving truck with. Moving does not have to mean putting aside your ideals of environmentally friendly living. Instead, think of ways that you can green up your move by making it as efficient as possible. Both your wallet and your planet will thank you.
