Organic FarmWhy Are Food Washes Important

Tetracycline is an antibiotic commonly found used in the agriculture business. It isn’t uncommon to find antibiotic use in food production. Nevertheless, you may not think about antibiotic use when you think of your produce. Even your organic fruits and vegetables are susceptible to antibiotic spray exposure. The same antibiotics used to combat sickness  and speed growth in animals used for meat production could be on your  precious produce.

Does your food wash protect you from these chemicals?

An Organic Apple a Day

While doing a little research into the antibiotics that are prevalent in the food industry, I ran across a disturbing article. Up until October of 2014, organic apple growers in the United States were allowed to spray their orchards with an antibiotic from the tetracycline family. Antibiotic use was shocking because when you buy organic food you buy with the hope that you are buying chemical-free food. For the most part, this is true but we all must be consumer-wise. Not only must we protect ourselves from cross-contamination but also as this lesson will show we must also guard against whatever current policy may deem as allowed at the time. From about 2002 it was approved for organic apple growers to use antibiotics to combat a very serious condition that was wiping out orchards. Fire Blight, (Erwinia amylovora) was causing orchard owners thousands if not millions of dollars of damage and complete orchards would be lost. To try to stop this apple sickness, they approved antibiotic spraying “temporarily.” However, trying to get the temporary fix to end became difficult when it meant using trial and error methods to find alternate ways to fight Fire Blight. Who would risk their livelihood to be the testing orchard? October 2014 became the year that enough was enough and Germany was one country that developed one alternative to fight Fire Blight organically. Cross-breeding with hardier types of apples that were more resistant was another way to combat the sickness. However, in the meantime all those years of spraying have seeped into the soil – so we are not out of the woods. How you clean your produce is more important than ever for both organic and conventional produce.
