Alzheimer's and DementiaEnvironmental Factors That Affect Our Long-term Health

“…A growing body of evidence demonstrates neurologic impacts at lower levels of chronic exposure to neurotoxic pesticides in adults…One of these studies conducted in the Netherlands found that gardeners (as well as farmers) had an increased risk of having mild cognitive dysfunction at the outset of the study, as well as an increased risk of developing mild cognitive dysfunction over the three-year course of the study.” (Environmental Factors in the Development of Dementia)

Alzheimer’s and Dementia — Still a Mystery?

Today I asked my friend to go ahead and get into the fridge and I would be out in a minute to take us shopping. You heard that right, the fridge. I am not suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s, nor am I making light of the seriousness of the disease. My confusion is simply from not taking my own zen advice – I’ve been burning my candle at both ends. Though this was just a lapse in memory, it is frightening for those diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s or Dementia. The cause of either is still a bit of a mystery to researchers and more research is needed to fight this disease which robs a person of their own mind. It is a horrifying thing to wake up one day,  thrust into a place which seems completely alien. As the disease progresses, a wonderful family member, a veteran who served bravely, or a loyal and loving friend is lost piece by piece. It is devastating for both the individual and their family and friends.

Links Have Been Found!

Thanks to constant ongoing research, a genetic link has been found. Those with a family history of this disease can be more prepared for the possibility of the same diagnosis in themselves. This advancement in research also gives an individual the ability to make life changes that may help delay or completely hold off the diagnosis. While we do know that some people have a genetic predisposition that leaves them more susceptible, nothing is a sure thing – it’s impossible to tell who will be affected by Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

“… Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School believes there is a connection between the rising number of Alzheimer’s cases and the greater amounts of nitrogen-based chemicals added to our food over the past few decades. Along with nitrogen-based fertilizers they include nitrates and nitrites, which are used to preserve, color and to flavor processed foods (as well as those added to tobacco products). In acidic environments, such as the stomach, or at high temperatures, as those reached in cooking, these compounds transform into toxic nitrosamines,” (Scientific America)

Plainly spoken, our American diets and our exposure to food additives and pesticides are killing us in many more ways than we may realize. The chemicals in our food and environment may have the ability to steal our memories by encouraging Alzheimer’s and Dementia!
