These days, more and more people are realizing just how much of a carbon footprint they are leaving on the earth. That is just one reason why they are turning towards Eco friendly options when it comes to building their homes. There are a few features that, when integrated into a home, make it an Eco-friendly haven to live in.

1. Rainwater Storage

Because water is such a precious commodity, it is important for us to conserve as much of it as possible. That is why it makes sense for as many home owners as possible to install rainwater storage tanks on their properties. Not only can this water be used for watering gardens or washing cars, it can also be used for drinking water if the correct filters are installed on the rainwater storage tanks.

2. Solar Power

With the recent advances in solar power technology, it has become possible for an entire household to live off the grid and rely entirely on the sun to provide all of its power needs. From lights to appliances and even hot water heaters, there is virtually no limit to what can be powered by solar technology today. Many people have even succeeded in developing their own solar panels and power systems.

3. Sustainable Building Materials

Gone are the days where everyone simply built their homes with bricks and mortar. Many people are now turning to sustainable building materials such as locally grown timber or even sod to build their homes. In some cases, Eco conscious individuals have even taken their recycling efforts to the maximum and built homes from pallet wood or even glass bottles.

4. Food Gardens

With the rising cost of food today as well as growing concerns regarding the safety of genetically modified foods, more people are resorting to growing their own food. Not only does this make them more aware of where their food comes from, it also allows them to spend quality time connecting with nature in the process. Although food gardens require time and patience in order to thrive, the effort definitely pays off in the end.

5. Recycling Features

Eco-friendly homes will usually make use of an array of recycling bins or services in order to reduce the amount of waste that they produce. Among the most common items which can be recycled are various types of plastic, paper, wood and glass. Used aluminium cans are usually also taken to the nearest recycling center and exchanged for cash. By recycling all of the above mentioned items, an Eco friendly household is able to substantially minimize the amount of household waste that they generate.

6. The Use of Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

More and more people are becoming aware of the health risks that are associated with chemical-based cleaning products. This is why they are turning towards more natural alternatives such as vinegar, baking soda, lemon or even good old-fashioned hot water and homemade soap. Not only does this prevent the build up of unnecessary chemicals in the home, but it is also beneficial to those who are sensitive to chemical products.

7. Re-purposing Existing Items in the Home

Anyone who visits an Eco-friendly home will usually notice a variety of household items that have been re-purposed  For example, and old baby safety gate may be used in the garden to keep the dog out or dog food bags may be used as trash bags. Clothing that is no longer able to be worn is usually re-purposed as cleaning cloths or stuffing for craft projects. Although these are among the more popular features seen in Eco friendly homes, there are many others as well. By adopting an Eco friendly attitude and lifestyle, a lot of money can be saved while knowing that you are also doing your bit to help the environment at the same time.
