positive and negativeNegative vs. Positive Influences

Negative thoughts come to all of us at some point. In fact, bad feelings or thoughts can be helpful and even essential to our survival. Intuition has been an important part of human survival. However, when we are constantly around negative people or find ourselves feeding into negative thoughts – it can be harmful to our health! Positive influences in our lives can be uplifting and have even had the power to help the body heal. When we are around positive people we feel energized and capable. How can negative or positive relationships affect you? What steps can you take to eliminate negative thoughts or influences in your life?

Negative Speak

The Mayo Clinic noted several ways that you can lower stress through positive thinking. It’s not a mystery or some kind of magical pill. There is actual science behind the way we think and the way our body responds. When we allow negativity in our lives we begin to feel the burden and stress that accompanies it. This stress releases hormones like cortisol which can cause weight gain. All the snowballing effects that come with stress can then cause anxiety, sleeplessness, and even depression. Your health and outlook on life is also affected by how you speak to yourself. Our self-talk can dictate how we see ourselves and the world.

Positive Effects of Positive Influence

Positive thinking isn’t about ignoring all the negative. Life isn’t all roses and daisies. It doesn’t mean that you should ignore when bad things happen. Being present in life is important and ignoring or putting off important events or problems only leads to other problems. However, when we find ways to look on the bright side of life we can reap an overflowing garden of possibilities. Our health can even improve! The Mayo Clinic noted the following benefits of positive thinking:

  • Longer life
  • Lower depression
  • Greater resistance to sickness
  • Better psychological wellbeing
  • Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease

Those Around Us

One of the most formidable opponents to positive thinking is association. You can’t always control who you are associating with. Your coworkers, for example, are not always easy to turn off. This is where having those moments after work to decompress are important. However, some of our associations we can control. Some relationships, no matter how hard you try to keep them positive, are toxic. These relationships need distance and sometimes may need severed altogether. If you find yourself falling into the same patterns of behaviors that have the same negative outcomes – look around you. Perhaps you need to reassess your relationships, how you talk to yourself, or a combination of factors. You deserve good things. Your life is yours to shape. Bring along those that you wish to share it with and who will lift you up throughout the journey. Most of all – be kind to yourself!
