no-sugarSugar-Free is easy with Natural Substitutes!

We have heard so much about all the unhealthy substitutes that are out there claiming to be healthier than sugar. We have also gone over why sugar itself really shouldn’t be included in our diets – or seriously minimized! It can be hard to go cold turkey, often this can backfire, and before you know it, you are hiding in a closet gorging on a cake. Perhaps you wouldn’t be that extreme, but for many the common complaint is that it doesn’t feel good to go cold turkey. Thankfully, you don’t have to! Once again, the Earth has provided, and nature offers us healthier ways to tame our sweet tooth.

Don’t Go Cold Turkey!

If you feel passionate to throw out every item of junk food in your house – have at it. However, most people find that the moment of passion causing the hardcore conviction to rid their diet and home of sugar soon passes to a dull roar. It isn’t that you are not just as passionate about being healthy or that you don’t have conviction about wanting to make a change. It’s that we are human, and your body has been running on this stuff! What many don’t realize is sugar can create an addiction-like craving that can leave you binging later. This is followed by guilt and self-loathing and a firmer passion and conviction to go cold turkey – again. You can see where the cycle can continue.

Time for The Good Stuff

Whether you are trying to come down from your sugar high or simply find new ways to live a healthier, sweet, organic lifestyle – Mother Nature has it all! Here is a great recipe compliments of Nadia: The Good Food Cook:

Ingredients (Organic is best!)

  • coconut oil ½ cup
  • honey ½ cup (Organic and Raw)
  • bananas 3 large ripe, mashed (Don’t’ be afraid to use what you think is Over-ripe!)
  • desiccated coconut 2 cups (desiccated means that it has VERY low moisture)
  • flour 1 cup
  • baking powder 1 teaspoon (check it is gluten-free if required)
  • free-range eggs 4
  • lemons 2, zested (grate that peel!)
  • salt one pinch

How to:

Preheat oven to 180 degC/355 Fahrenheit.

  1. Gently melt honey and coconut oil together in a small pot.
  1. Use a fork to mix mashed bananas, coconut, flour, baking powder, honey mixture, eggs, lemon zest and salt together in a large mixing bowl until combined (be careful not to over-mix the ingredients, especially if using wheat flour).
  1. Pour into a greased and lined loaf tin and bake for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.

“The loaf will keep (unsliced) in an airtight container for up to 5 days. It also freezes well. A slice of this is delicious warmed up and spread with a little butter!” VIOLA! Beautiful banana bread! (Sugar and artificial sugar-free)
